I have waited for SO long to read this book. I was first introduced to Matt Long and his miraculous story in a Runner's World article about a year ago. Bart, our local Lake Jackson Branch librarian, ordered the book for me off of Amazon. I read the book in about 3 days! Oh MY! So inspiring. Long Story short:
Matt was a 9/11 Fireman at Post 43 in NYC! He comes from a big, loud, Catholic family from Brooklyn! Love it. He is a triathlete that had qualified for the Boston Marathon 2 months before he got run over (NOT hit...RUN OVER) by a 40,000lb bus. The circumstances surrounding the accident and the amazing obstacles that he overcame to survive were amazing. The book details the 2 years from the time of his calamity until his return as not only a marathoner...but an IRON MAN! Yes...but I won't give away too many details. This is not some glamorous, glossy hero tale. It is dirty, gritty, gruesome, funny, inspiring and human story of reality, perseverance, relationships and overcoming! He is a true hero to me.
I was on the verge on pneumonia last Tuesday when I went to Urgent Care for this month long lingering cough. My right heel is inflamed and my last 8 mile run left me in near tears of frustration. I have been cold, nauseous, pregnant, post-pregnant, exhausted and at times less than desired profitable trying to run my business the last 2 years. BUT...as Matt says...if physical (or whatever realm) of accomplishments in life were easy...than everyone would do it! This book inspires me to grow up, stop complaining, and thank GOD for what I do have and hit the ground running. Breakthrough comes not to the most talented, most qualified, rich or beautiful... breakthrough comes to those who don't QUIT! Even now days before the race I have to push back all of the negative thoughts about how SLOW I feel I am running and just concentrate on what I have, what we have, accomplished! The bond I have with Sabrina, Jess, Meredith and Gina is the gold! The memories we have laughing, struggling and freezing together is priceless! The cardio endurance that I gained (and lost over the last few weeks) is a blessing...and WILL RETURN! Being able to finish a race that I NEVER pictured myself being able to accomplish 10 years ago is also eye opening! ENJOY THE RIDE ALREADY!
What about you? What are the areas that have not come easy for you...but have proved to be an area of vicorty?
